Despacito becomes the most viewed video on YouTube

Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s Despacito has just become the most viewed video on YouTube with over 3 billion views in just 7 months.

Earlier in July Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again” from Furious 7 stole the title of most viewed video from Psy’s “Gangnam Style,” which had held the record since 2012.

Even though Despacito was in Spanish even then people from all over the world loved the song. Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again” took 26 months to break the record of Psy’s “Gangnam Style” but Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s Despacito did it I just 7 months.

Since its release on January 12, it has been watched nearly 15 million times every day, or 170 times per second. A remixed version of “Despacito” featuring Justin Bieber has nearly 500 million views as well.

Daddy Yankee even posted a video on Instagram responding for becoming the new king of YouTube.

Thank you YouTube for Despacito’s success. I recognize the influence that the platform has. The music industry has changed. The rules of music have changed. And YouTube has a big responsibility, and I recognize it. Breaking the record is overwhelming, and I’m happy to keep [inspiring] others to do the same.
