India vs Sri Lanka, 1st Test - India beat Sri Lanka by 304 runs to take 1-0 lead
The first test ended in a way that everyone would have imagined, India thrashed Sri Lanka by a huge margin of 304 runs to win the first test of 3 match series. Indian team proved to be too good as they won the match within 4 days even with all the rain interruptions.
India set Sri Lanka a target of 550 runs to win, but Indian bowlers got through Sri Lankan middle order as Sri Lanka was all out on Day 4 final session with two of their batsmen absent hurt. This was India’s biggest win in terms of runs and for Sri Lanka was their biggest loss at home.
For Sri Lanka Dimuth Karunaratne (97) and Niroshan Dickwella (67) tried hard to take the match to the final day as they took the total to 192/4 before tea-break. But Ravichandran Ashwin (3/65) ended his wait for a wicket in second innings as he edged out Dickwella and then got the wicket of Karunratne before he could score his century. After that Jadeja went on to remove the last man for Sri Lanka as India wrapped the test on a penultimate day.
Opener Karunaratne resisted hard first with Kusal Mendis (36) and then with Dickwella. With the new ball, Mohammad Shami and Umesh Yadav proved much effective as they removed Upul Tharanga and Danusha Gunathilaka respectively.
Pitch was great for batsmen as was shown by Karunaratne, he did not try hard but was still effective in resisting Indian bowling attack and got close to his century. But still Sri Lanka had to chase a mammoth total after Virat Kohli hit his 17th century and declared on 240/3.
For the 4th wicket, Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane scored a quick 51 and left Sri Lanka with a battle for survival with only a couple of Sri Lankan batsmen showing some resistance.
Final scores were: India 600 and 240/3d beat Sri Lanka 291 and 245 by 304 runs.
