After spending 13 trophy studded years with Manchester United, Rooney decided to join his boyhood club Everton. Rooney said he was ecstatic and his first game for Everton will be an emotional one. Everton re-signed Rooney for a 2-year deal for an undisclosed amount.
What lead to Rooney’s exit from Old Trafford
For Manchester United Rooney was leading goal scorer in five instances and on another instance shared it with Cristiano Ronaldo. He has won 5 Premier League titles and each of the Champions League, Europa League and FA Cup once. He has also been named fans’ player of the year twice.
Rooney who was a regular starting eleven player for Manchester United was often left out Jose Mourinho. He only played 25 games last season – the least he has been in one season and went on to score just eight goals, which was the worst of his career.
And this lead to his exit from international squad, yet he has not retired and need six more caps to equal all-time record of 125 appearances.
There were many instances when Rooney ended up being an unused substitute.
Jose Mourinho spoke about Rooney’s exit from the club:
It is no secret that I have long been an admirer of Wayne. He has been a model professional throughout his time at the club and will remain in the history books for many years to come.
It is never easy to see a great player playing less football than he would like and I could not stand in his way when he asked to go back to Everton.
His experience, focus and determination will be missed and I wish him well for the future.
Rooney returns to from where it all started
Rooney will wear the number 10 shirt worn by Lukaku confirmed Everton. With Rooney’s transfer, United look to sign Everton’s Lukaku for a £75 million deal.
Rooney was emotional on his return and said:
I’m not just coming back because it’s the team I support, the team I grew up playing for – I’m coming back because I feel the club can move forward and be successful.
I want to be part of it. There will be pressure on me to perform, but I’m ready to go. I believe I can help move this club forward and be more successful on the pitch.
Rooney also said that when he found out Everton was keen on signing him up, he told his manger to make it happen. There were other options but once he knew Everton were keen on signing him up, he said there was nowhere else to go.
Everton’s manager Koeman was looking forward to this day since October as he said he would be pleased if Rooney joins Everton.
Koeman said the following on Rooney’s return:
He loves Everton and he was desperate to come back. He is still only 31 and I don’t have any doubts about his qualities. It’s fantastic he’s here. One of the functions for Wayne is to show the rest of the team why he is – and still is – that player.
Well it might be a shock to Manchester United fans, Everton fans are all overjoyed, they are excited with Rooney’s return and see a great deal of fortune for Everton with Rooney’s return.
