Angelo Mathews quits captaincy from all the 3 formats after series defeat to Zimbabwe
After Sri Lanka team lost to Zimbabwe in a 5 match ODI series, Sri Lankan Captain Angelo Mathews has officially given up the captaincy of Sri Lanka for all three formats.
This decision came up after the team had to suffer defeat against Zimbabwe. Sri Lanka lost the series 2-3 to Zimbabwe.
According to Mathews, this loss was a new low for the Sri Lankan cricket and steps should be taken to revive the quality of cricket played by Sri Lanka.
In response to the resignation given by Mathews, Sri Lanka’s cricket board has handed over the test captaincy to Dinesh Chandimal and limited over captaincy is handed over to Upul Tharanga.
These all developments came after Sri Lanka lost the 5th and final ODI against Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe won the match by 3 wickets and the 11th ranked nation registered the first ever series win in the South Asian country.
After the brief meeting of Mathews and Sanath Jayasuriya concluded, Sri Lanka’s Cricket Board representative told that “He has quit the captaincy from all three forms of the game”.
Sri Lankan cricket has seen new lows. After a poor show in Champions Trophy, the coach Graham Ford also gave his resignation and after that Nic Pothas was named as the coach for the Zimbabwe series.
