Huawei’s Android license terminated by Google, here’s why

The US-China trade war has just come out as a big blow for Huawei, the Chinese tech giant. Following the newly authorized protocols by the US government led by President Donald Trump, Google has suspended the Android license of the world’s second largest smartphone manufacturer forcing the company to move to the Android Open Source Project.

US government thinks of Huawei as a potential arm of the Chinese government which they are using to spy on the American networks, which is why Huawei has been under a tremendous amount of pressure by the US President and the US government. In 2018, US intelligence agencies issued a warning statement against Huawei and other ZTE devices and have described them as “Tech weapons of the Chinese government” to keep an eye on the United States network.

Companies like Google, Intel, Qualcomm, Xilinx, and others have terminated business with the Chinese maker, following the order by the President of the United States meaning there will be no more Google support and services or any kind of networking hardware for upcoming Huawei smartphones. This also means Huawei will only be able to push further security updates once they are made available in ASOP, assuming the company uses its own update system.

Although Huawei manufactures its own flagship chipsets like Kirin 980 with Balong 5000 modem for the 5G connectivity, the company is highly dependent on US chip suppliers for most of its cheaper devices to remain on the second spot in the list of the world’s largest smartphone manufacturing companies.

Reaching out to one of the Huawei’s spokesperson and according to The Verge article, the statement said that it is not possible for the Chinese government to poison its equipment with backdoors, and it has remained optimistic about the future of its business. But this latest setback from Google and other companies will reflect great damage to Huawei’s core mobile business and might hinder its way to becoming world’s no. 1 smartphone manufacturer by the year 2021.
