According to a new report from Nikkei Asian Review, the Japanese tech giant company Sony is about to experience a tectonic shift. The company might cut-off half of its smartphone workforce by 2020 which will leave 2000 of its employees jobless. The company might shift some of the employees in the other divisions of the company instead of leaving them without a job.
It should be noted that Nikkei Asian Review does not cite a source in its article on this matter. However, the publication is highly-regarded and trustworthy.
Besides, the bad news may not be a surprise for many. The company never had a strong foothold in the smartphone world. Recently, after facing a loss of $1 billion in 2018, the company moved its mobile division into another division that makes TVs, cameras, and other tech gear probably to hide the huge loss in its mobile division.
The downsizing of the division is not the first time it is happening. Back in 2009, Sony slashed 1000 jobs from mobile and then made another cut of 2000 jobs in 2015. The cut-off, reportedly, was a result of the slow market sales the company was facing.
Despite the slow sale rate of mobiles in the market, the company recently showcased its new flagship phone Xperia 1, at Mobile World Congress (MWC 2019) last month. No doubt, Sony is doing all they can to compete with other smartphone manufacturing companies but the question is how many more cut-offs will the company endure staying alive in the smartphone industry?
