WhatsApp co-founder Jan Koum is leaving Facebook

Facebook has been facing a ton of heat over its data privacy controversy, and amid all that WhatsApp co-founder Jan Koum is departing the Facebook family. Mark Zuckerberg has praised Jan Koum and addressed him as the man who taught him about the power of encryption.

This all came after the biggest Facebook data scandal, Cambridge Analytica Scandal. Facebook had bought the messaging app in 2014 for $19 billion.

This is what Jan Koum wrote on his Facebook post:

But Washington Post wrote that Jan Koum had issues with the Facebook’s approach to user privacy, data protection, and encryption. He would also be leaving Facebook board of directors. Earlier John Acton another WhatsApp co-founder, left the company and joined the #DeleteFacebook campaign.

Facebook’s poor privacy protections were exposed as data millions of profiles were collected by Cambridge Analytica without the knowledge of users.

Mark Zuckerberg responded to Koum’s departure with this statement ”for everything you’ve taught me, including about encryption and its ability to take power from centralized systems and put it back in people’s hands.”
