Netflix brings a Mobile-only plan in India that costs $3.64

Netflix seeks to lure in more members across the globe and expand its users with bringing cheap and more affordable plans in selected Asian countries like India and few others. With a sharp increase in the trend for Web series, India has become a key market for content-streaming platforms like Netflix.

Only last year Netflix opened an office in Mumbai, and it has commissioned about 12 series and a dozen movies from the nation so far and now to expand its user base in the country Netflix has rolled out low costing data plans. A Netflix spokesperson said in a statement that

“We are always looking for ways to make Netflix more enjoyable and accessible. We will be testing different options in select countries where members can, for example, watch Netflix on their mobile device for a lower price and subscribe in shorter increments of time. Not everyone will see these options and we may never roll out these specific plans beyond the tests.”

The new prices brings Netflix subscription at 250 rupees (around $3.64) per month but this price is still more than the cost of the plans that the rival content-streaming platforms offer, like Amazon Prime Video that costs 129 rupees (around $1.88) per month as a part of Prime subscription, Hotstar’s plans begins at 199 rupees ($2.89).

The lower plans are still a test, not all users will see the new plan and it’s possible that Netflix won’t make it a permanent option for the users. There is no further information about which other countries besides India are listed to get these low-cost plans. This step by Netflix seems to make sense but we are not sure whether it will be a success in the country. Do share your opinion and tell us what do you think in the comment section below.
