Sony reveals the details for the next-gen console PlayStation 5

After the PlayStation 4 Pro, it was not much of a secret that Sony is working on its next-gen console or to put it more easily PlayStation 5. Kenichiro Yoshida, the company president said last October that it was necessary that the company should bring a next-generation hardware console soon.

In a new interview with system architect Mark Cerny in Wired, Sony for the first time talked about its next-gen PlayStation on which the company has been working for the past four years. The PlayStation 5 – though the name is not official yet- is in the hands of game makers right now in the form of developer kits.

The details provided by the Cerny to Wired on PlayStation 5 hardware says that the new console is powered by a CPU based on third-generation AMD Ryzen processor and a GPU based on AMD’s Radeon Navi, which will support ray tracing and resolutions of 8K graphics. A new 3D audio technology will also be a part of the next-gen console by Sony. The new system will be backward-compatible with PS4 games and can support the current VR headset. The hard drive of the PlayStation 5 is said to be replaced by an SSD to improve the load time. To show the benefit of using an SSD over the hard disk, Wired showcased a demo booting up Insomniac’s Spider-Man game and showing how fast-travel times could be reduced from 15 seconds to just 0.8 seconds.

Sony has not confirmed any official date of the launch for the new console but definitely has turned down 2019 as the year for the launch. The company is also not taking a part in E3, the industry’s largest and most prestigious trade show, which ends the probability of the console to be showcased in the event. However, rumors suggest that 2020 may be the year for the new product. One thing is for sure, whenever Sony’s new console arrives in the market it will have to face a lot of competition in the market from Microsoft and also Google Stadia, that promises high-fidelity gaming with less hardware requirements.
