On June 4th Earth had a close encounter with an asteroid traveling at a speed of 22,284 kmph, the chances of it hitting the Earth were quite low and it missed the earth by 2.1 million km, still not a very large unit in terms of astronomical measurement.
But the threat of an asteroid collision is always on our mind, so NASA and ESA (European Space Agency) are working together to build a planetary defense mechanism to save earth from asteroid collisions.
They are currently working on a spacecraft that can hit away these space bodies and will change their trajectories away from earth. Earlier this month NASA demonstrated DART(Double Asteroid Redirection Technique), a planetary defense technique.
Next Total Solar Eclipse will be on July 2, 2019, reported by NASA
Until now everything was based on simulations and modeling, but now NASA has started to manufacture different parts of the spacecraft, also a full-scale demo version is ready.
Probably these agencies have everything figured out, and probably we would be safe of the damage that is caused due to these asteroid strikes. The most recent being 2013, when a six-story asteroid broke over a Chelyabinsk a city in Russia and had an impact more intense than a nuclear bomb. It eventually ended up injuring 1200 people.
