Hyundai reveals Tiger X-1 a car that can walk on its legs

Hyundai revealed their new autonomous vehicle named Tiger X-1 which not only drives but also walks on its four legs. This is still a concept car but the technology that Hyundai has put into it is pretty remarkable.

This miniaturized vehicle is being designed keeping in mind the tough terrains and geographical locations that are inaccessible to standard vehicles. The wheels on this vehicle are positioned at the end of motorized and bendable legs.

This enables the car to simply walk over obstacles that it can’t drive through. Hyundai’s press release reads:

TIGER’s exceptional capabilities are designed to function as a mobile scientific exploration platform in extreme, remote locations. Based on a modular platform architecture, its features include a sophisticated leg and wheel locomotion system, 360-degree directional control, and a range of sensors for remote observation. It is also intended to connect to unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which can fully charge and deliver TIGER to inaccessible locations.

The car would be driverless and will be used to carry cargo and supplies. The vehicle can be used in the wake of disaster and can be used to help victims and deliver medical equipment or even food.

The vehicle could also be used to explore through the surfaces of the Moon and Mars as shown in a representation by Hyundai. Because of its design, it can easily travel through the tough terrain these planets offer.

Hyundai says that additional few years of development is still required to make the vehicle ready for real-world use.
