The Facebook oversight board has upheld the decision to ban President Donald Trump from Facebook, a verdict that shows how the company will act on leaders that will violate its rules.
Facebook had banned Donald Trump over his remarks on the Jan 6 Capitol Violence by his supporters.
“Given the seriousness of the violations and the ongoing risk of violence, Facebook was justified in suspending Mr. Trump’s accounts on January 6 and extending that suspension on January 7,” the board said after its review.
Facebook had indefinitely blocked Donald Trump from its platform, regarding this board has sought that Facebook must reexamine the arbitrary penalty it had imposed earlier and decide on the appropriate penalty for the account.
“It is not permissible for Facebook to keep a user off the platform for an undefined period, with no criteria for when or whether the account will be restored,” the board added.
The verdict by the board marks a major decision by the board. Earlier Facebook had been rebuked over its handling of sensitive content on its platform and how it has been handling social media accounts of world leaders.
Facebook Oversight board is an idea that Zukerberg first introduced in 2018, currently it has 18 members which includes Former Danish Prime Minister and several law experts and rights advocates.
